REVOLUTIONS®

Revolutions®

Medium ········· Short Documentary

Language ······· English

Revolutions is a short documentary that asks sports enthusiasts, brands, and manufacturers to think differently about environmental sustainability by putting sporting goods at the centre of the conversation. The film uses the bike as a storytelling device to ask some important questions about sustainability such as: What happens to our “toys” when we’re done with them? What happens to a bike at its end-of-life stage? What would it take to design everything with the end in mind?

With an estimated 18 million new bikes purchased each year in America alone (National Bicycle Dealers Association, 2015), the bicycle has become an important cultural text that has largely managed to elide environmental criticisms even though it ends up in the landfill with all of our other garbage.

This documentary draws on research supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Yuko Suda wasn’t always a farmer. A civil engineer by profession, Yuko entered farming when she became a parent. She sought farming as a way to fight climate change, support the local ecology and be a better parent. As a child, her mother had trouble finding authentic Japanese ingredients to cook with. Becoming a parent led her to question what it meant to be Japanese and how home cooked meals can pass down culture.

A small-scale intensive farm, Yuko focuses on growing Asian vegetables in harmony with our natural environment. Celebrating its 5th year of operation, Yuko has had to overcome all the challenges of running a farm. The biggest of which is creating a financially sustainable business. To meet the challenge, Yuko has partnered with the Hua Foundation.

Brave Child Farms and Kevin Huang from the Hua Foundation run a CSA program called “Choi Box.” The goal of this CSA program is to support Asian Farmers and provide local and environmentally responsible grown Asian greens. Yuko and her team continue to shape our local food systems, providing vegetables so families can create their family dishes in an ecologically responsible way.
